Inspired by my domestic tutelary guardian, my great-great-great-great grandmother, Sarah Sally Hay Edwards, 1860-1945. Called "Big Granny" by her family, Sally was an Appalachian midwife from the holler of Russell County, Virginia. Sally was known to charge $3 to deliver a grandchild, $5 for a great-grandchild & $7 for anyone else.
